What are your hours? Our hours are 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM through 3:30 PM on Saturday. Is the Humane Society a government agency? No. The Humane Society provides limited law enforcement services on a contractual basis, but is organized as a charitable non-profit corporation. How is the Humane Society funded? We are funded by a blend of income sources, including contractual income, service income (adoptions, trap rentals, ID tags, etc.), and donations. What should I do if I can’t keep an animal any more? All animals are welcome at the Humane Society. However, because our supply exceeds the demand, we recommend you attempt to find a home among friends, relatives and acquaintances first. A "Free Pet to Good Home" ad is not a good idea, because you have no control over your pets quality of life after it leaves your home. We recommend that any pet that is given to a new home be spayed or neutered, so it does not contribute to the pet overpopulation. What should I do if I find a stray? Please call us immediately. There is a good chance someone is already looking for a lost pet. If you wish to keep it while the owner is found, that’s fine, or we’ll come pick it up. If I find a stray I like, can I keep it? Yes, but there is a specific legal process by which such an animal becomes yours. You must list it as a found pet with the shelter, and advertise it twice in the newspaper. If the owner does not come forward, the pet becomes yours in 90 days. This applies to pets only, not other domestic animals such as livestock. How long are animals kept at the shelter? This varies depending on the time of year. We keep animals as long as we have room and they remain healthy. In many cases, animals are here for a month or more. However, when a lot of animals arrive at the shelter, we quickly run out of room. Who is the best veterinarian? We work with all the veterinarians in the community, and don’t recommend any one over the rest. A long-term relationship with a vet clinic is critical to the welfare of your pets. Simple preventive measures like vaccines are very inexpensive, and prevent large future vet bills. How much does it cost to spay or neuter a dog or cat? Costs vary, depending on the weight of the animal, the difficulty of the surgery, and other factors. Costs can range from about $25.00 to more than $100.00. The cost of surgery is far less than the cost of proper medical care for a litter of puppies or kittens. Why should I consider spaying or neutering my pet? The Humane Society exists largely for the purpose of dealing with the tragic pet overpopulation in our community. Every dog or cat born adds to the problem. Spayed and neutered pets live longer lives, and are less likely to contract certain common diseases. Your veterinarian can give you lots more advice about the advantages of surgery. What’s the difference between an animal control officer and the dogcatcher we see in cartoons? An animal control officer is a law enforcement professional, trained to solve problems that arise when people and animals leave near each other. Officers receive considerable training, are sworn as officers of the court, and must meet continuing education requirements to keep their commissions.
